January 26, 2012-Despite the length of time since the disaster in Haiti, many are still in need of assistance, especially women who have fallen victim to violence. Over twenty participants met at 1199SEIU’s Headquarters in midtown Manhattan to pack survival kits for Haiti’s women and girls. The kits contain essential toiletries, such as toothpaste, soap, lotion, and deodorant and personal grooming items. Over 250 survival kits along with medical supplies will be delivered to a medical and rape counseling clinic in Croix des Bouquets and Leogane, Haiti.

This is the first of many initiatives for the Greater NY Links, Inc. to support the women in Haiti. It is consistent with the organization’s national focus to support the country in various capacities. In addition, this event is an integral component to Greater New York Chapter of The Links, Inc, and Umbrella Program to eradicate domestic violence both in US and throughout the Africa Diasporas.

The Links, Inc. is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of 12,000 professional women of color in 274 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of the Bahamas. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

About 1199SEIU it is the largest labor Union in North America and consists of over 1.8 million healthcare and building service workers and public employees. Its members work in the homecare, hospital and nursing home industries, as well as pharmacies, freestanding clinics and other healthcare settings. They care for the sick, the infirm, and elderly.
